COURSE 2 : Structure data creating Parts and Bill Of Materials (BOM)/Part structures

Objectives

Parts and Part structures are the essence of a PLM system.

OpenPLM has a specific type of Object called Part. Each Part is the virtual equivalent of real part. Linking them together and creating a structure, you get a BOM (Bill Of Material) which describes the Products developped by team members.

Linking them with Documents, you organize and structure all data.

You will learn how to create Parts and create links between Parts.

Pre-conditions

  1. You should be looged in with a valid user who have "Contributor" rights. See TutoGroupsandUsers for User creation.

Create first Part

1. In the home page, click on "Create" button :
2. Select "Part" in the "Type" menu :
3. Enter "Name" of the Part and click on "Create" button :

The part is identified by its triplet (type, reference, revision). This triplet is unique. By default, the reference is generated by OpenPLM but you can override it.

The name does not identify a part. Two different parts can have the same name. Its purpose is to help searching a part.

The group allows you to restrict access of the part to its members (until the part becomes official). The lifecycle describes the steps used to validate a part. The default lifecycle is simple, it has 3 states: draft, official and deprecated. We will explain how to promote a part later.

The description field allows you to enter a (short) description. You can use a specific syntax to format the content. It is an optional field that is indexed by the search engine. If you need to specify a long specification, you should attach a document. This step is explained in the next course.

Create a second part and link it with the first one

1. Follow the same process as First Part creation
2. Go to BOM-CHILD tab and click on "Add an existing Part" :
3. On the left, Search engine appear, search for your first Part and click on ADD :
4. Specify the quantity, then click on "Validate" :
5. The second Part is the parent and the first one the child and it appears in the BOM table :
6. Other way to visualize it, click on "Navigate" :
7. And you'll get this :

Create & link Part

We can create a Part and link it in one single process. Here is two ways to proceed.

First way, in Navigate mode:

1. In Navigate mode, click on "Add a new Part" button :
2. Create third Part as already explained :
3. Specify quantity and click OK :

Second way, BOM-CHILD tab:

1. In the BOM-CHILD tab, click on "Create a part and add it" button :
2. Create forth Part as already explained :
3. Enter Quantity and click on OK :

csv import for parts creation

1. In the home page, click on "Create" button :
2. Follow the link : "Import several parts or documents from CSV file. "
3. Select a CSV file and validate (see an example)
4. If not done by OpenPLM, set a field for each line and validate

csv import for BOM creation

Note : All Parts shall have been created before. The BOM csv import just creates links between existing parts

1. In the home page, click on "Create" button :
2. Follow the link : "Import a BOM from a CSV file. "
3. Select a CSV file and validate (see an example)
4. If not done by OpenPLM, set a field for each line and validate
